Karyssa, on the other hand, amazes me in ways that are very hard to describe. It's a look, a laugh, a touch, all that mean so much to me, but are very hard to write about and convey just how she does what she does. She is sly, with a personality that could one day be very manipulative (I know this is one of the things God has tasked me with as a parent). She loves to laugh and to make people laugh. She does this with facial expressions and lots of teasing.
I wrote this in a Forget Me Not post over a year ago, but she still does it and it's one way to illustrate how silly she can be, and how she does things to purposefully make us laugh:
Every night, we read a book, pray and sing "Rock-a-Bye Baby" to the kids, while we rock them in our arms. When I was growing up, my mom changed the last line of the song for us. Instead of singing "And down will come baby, cradle and all", we sing "But Mommy will catch it, baby and all." Jason, not to be outdone by "mommy" started singing "But Daddy will catch it". They fill in most of the words to the song, including that line. Now, whenever we're singing it to Karyssa, she will use the opposite name of whoever is holding her, and giggle. She knows exactly what she's doing, and she thinks it's hilarious!
She'll say, "Tickle me", and once she's laughing uncontrollably, she'll say, "stop!". As soon as we stop, she wants to be tickled again. She makes silly faces and sings silly songs (or silly words to songs she knows).
She doesn't want to cuddle, until she wants to cuddle. Ninety percent of the time, she initiates our cuddling sessions, but I love them however I can get them.
She doesn't want attention, until she wants attention. She plays shy, but when she opens up, it's with full force. She loves flowers and dresses, and talks constantly about marrying Kyran. She loves to splash in puddles, throw balls and eat. She loves to play with baby dolls and has recently asked for her first Barbie doll (more on that later). She loves her brother and her mommy, and especially her daddy. She knows how to give a pouty look, or bat her eyelashes, and we're working hard to resist her cuteness.
Speaking of her daddy, she has picked up his cleaning habits. She doesn't mind her toys being everywhere, but if she finds so much as a dog hair on the floor, she picks it up and asks me to throw it away. We've had to move the trash can into the pantry because if she deemed a toy "broken", she would throw it away (I think I lost a pair of nice sunglasses that way).
She loves to sing and dance. Her voice is so sweet and her dancing is so natural. She truly moves as she feels moved.
She is fiercely independent. She does occasionally want me to "feed her like a baby", but other than that, she wants to do things by herself.
When something makes her happy, her eyes light up and she raises her eyebrows, with just a hint of a smile. She doesn't want to give herself away, but her eyes say it all. She'll smile and say "cheese" for the camera, but usually not long enough for me to actually take the picture.
She gets very upset when any of us are hurt or crying. She wants to kiss my boo-boos and help Kyran up when he falls. If Isabella cries, she usually gets to her first to give her a pacifier, or stroke her arm.
She has an incredible imagination and loves to make up story lines for Kyran and her to act out. Some of my favorite times are listening to them while they are supposed to be napping, coming up with all sorts of scenarios and problems to solve.
She has a strong will and a curious mind. Two things I'm not always happy about now, but I know that if we do things right, those are the same two things that will help her reach the stars one day.
She is a comic. She is a nurturer. She is a beauty. She is a creator. She is a cleaner. She is a lover. She is a fighter. She is a joy. I am so blessed to have her as my little girl.
