15-Month Check-Up

As hard as it is to believe, Kyran and Karyssa turned 15 months yesterday, and had their 15-month check-up today.

Karyssa had a big weight gain, weighing in at 17 lb, 15 oz, a 2 lb gain from their last check-up in January.  She is now 27.5 inches, and her head is 45 cm.  Her height and weight are still below the fifth percentile, but her head is now in the 28th percentile!

Kyran didn't gain near as much, but since he has gotten so mobile, that is to be expected.  He now weighs 18 lb, 4 oz, is 28 inches and his head is 46.5 cm.  His height and weight are also below the fifth percentile, but his head is in the 34th percentile!

Dr. Bartlett used the word "perfect" several times to describe them!  She was very impressed with their cognitive development, saying it is on track, if not advanced, for babies their actual age!  She was also pretty impressed with their physical development, and thinks they will definitely be caught up by 2 years old, probably earlier.

One of the best things about this visit was the very beginning.  Each check-up begins with a sheet of paper that contains a list of milestones and activities that are common for babies of their age.  We go down the list and check yes or no, depending on whether they have achieved these milestones.  At the first visit, we had mostly yeses, but since then, it's been mostly nos, especially for Kyran.  Today, for both of them, we were able to check yes for all but three or four of the activities!!  What a great feeling!

She said that Kyran's 15-month molars should be coming in very soon, but she didn't see Karyssa's yet.

She said, although they most likely won't get the food in their mouths until they are 18 months old, that now is the time to start letting them experiment with food on their spoons.  For several months, we have been letting them play with spoons, and they have just recently been consistently getting the correct part in their mouths.  It looks like they'll have to go back to wearing bibs when they eat!

Another great piece of news is that RSV is gone!  She said if we want to put the babies in the church nursery on Easter, that they should be just fine!  (Just a little info about our church nursery - we go to a very small church, one of my closest friends is the nursery coordinator, and the other few babies who are in there will likely be our children's best friends as they grow up.  They are all the children of good friends of ours, who would never knowingly bring their sick kids to church, and are very aware of Kyran and Karyssa's situation.)  Obviously, if they begin getting sick regularly, we will re-evaluate, but for now, she said they should be ok!

This means we are ready to get out and have some play dates with other children!  How exciting!

This weekend, we went up to North Carolina to visit Aunt Tammy.  Bella came on this trip, and it was definitely a tight squeeze in the van, since the back seat had to be up for Bella to lay on.

The stairs at Tammy's place are about an inch shorter than the ones at our house, so look what happened!!  The other person in the video is Tammy's boyfriend, Carey, and the other voices you hear are Tammy and Granddad Burkett.

Oh My Goodness!!  My son, who doesn't even crawl on all fours yet, is climbing stairs!!  He's taken a couple at a time at our house, but never made it all the way up by himself.

Yesterday on the way home, it struck me that I have the coolest 15-month-olds I've ever known!  Karyssa was blowing raspberries and doing lots of things to try to make Kyran laugh, and Kyran was playing his newest peek-a-boo game.

The game started last weekend on the way to the zoo.  I turned around to look back at him in his headrest mirror, and he grinned, and then quickly turned his head to the side so that I couldn't see him in the mirror.  When he looked back, he had the biggest grin on his face.  This continued for a while, and then we got to the zoo.  The next night, on the way to our bible study, he started yelling.  Not crying or screaming, but yelling to get our attention.  As soon as I turned around, he did the same thing.  One week later, yesterday, he did the same exact thing.

I just can't get over how much fun my little kids are!!

Karyssa was playing peek-a-boo!

What kind of a face is that??
