One-Year Check-Up

Kyran and Karyssa had their one-year check-up today, and it seems like things are going very well!

Kyran now weighs 17 lb, 1 oz and is 27 inches, both below the curve, but he is still following the curve. His head is 45.5 cm, which puts him in the 23rd percentile for his actual age!

Karyssa is up to 15 lb, 14 oz and 26 inches. Still smaller than her brother and not on the curve, but still following it well. Her head is 44 cm, which is in the 19th percentile for her actual age!

Their colds are clearing up, and Dr. Bartlett was happy to see that neither one has an ear infection!

As far as development, she thinks that Karyssa is on track for her age physically and, since she says "mama", "dada" and "Bella", is at a 15-month level for speech!!! As far as the doctor is concerned, aside from infection control, Karyssa is no longer a preemie baby!!!!!!!

Kyran is doing better than she expected, although he is still having significant physical delays. I have been trying to get him into occupational therapy for two months now, and may have to try some new things to finally get him evaluated. Occupational therapy will deal with his fine motor skills, that will help him to feed himself and eventually write, among other things. Since he is saying "mama", "dada" and "hi", he is right on track for a year-old baby speech-wise.

Because they were preemies, we will have them both evaluated for speech and occupational therapy, and will take advantage of whatever free services we can.

We have been given the ok to give them whole milk and eggs now, so that means that pumping after every feeding will hopefully be a thing of the past. I will continue to nurse them before meals for a while, eventually weaning them by March, when they would have been 1, and when RSV season comes to an end. For the next couple of weeks, we will be attempting to make the transition from supplementing with pumped milk and formula in bottles to whole milk in sippy cups. Any advice is appreciated!

We will also be transitioning from three meals a day, every four or five hours, and a bedtime nursing to three meals, every 6 hours, with a snack or two in between. Again, any advice is appreciated.

They really like their baby food, so our plan is to continue to feed them baby food until 18 months or they no longer want it. I am open to suggestions of easy meals or snacks for babies, though.

Both babies continue to take 2-3 naps each day, and Dr. Bartlett said that is a good thing. Sleep, or even quiet time in the crib, helps them rest so that they can focus on their development better when they are awake.

Because of germs in the doctor's office during the winter, Dr. Bartlett wanted us to come in for the first appointment of the day. That meant waking the babies up at 6am (2 hours earlier than normal) and leaving the house at 7:30...on the coldest day of the year! Luckily their "big" heads fit (sort of) in my winter hats! They both seemed to be ok in the cold, so maybe they won't be as wimpy as their mommy when it comes to cold weather!

So, lots of changes coming up and, if you can't tell, I'm a little unsure of everything. Any tips or advice you have on making these transitions will be greatly appreciated!

If you read all of this, you deserve some pictures!
